How to Propose in a Hot Air Balloon in Marrakech

Book a private balloon, tell us in advance, and propose in the quiet stretch after the climb — roughly twenty minutes in, once the burner has settled and the plain has opened up below you. A private flight is 500 € per person; the seated Royal flight, where a steward serves breakfast in the air, is 650 €. Both give you a basket with nobody else in it.

This page is the planning, not the sales pitch: when in the flight to do it, what we can and cannot arrange, and the three things that go wrong when people improvise.

Why a balloon works for this

You are somewhere you cannot leave, at an hour when nothing else is happening, with a horizon that runs from the Jbilet ridge to the High Atlas. There is no waiter, no next table, no phone signal worth checking. For most of the flight the only sound is the burner, and between burns it is completely silent.

The practical part matters too: a balloon morning is over by mid-morning. You have the rest of the day to celebrate rather than to recover from a plan.

Private, or shared?

Private. This is the one case where we will not suggest the cheaper option.

A shared basket holds several groups of strangers. They will be lovely about it, and that is exactly the problem: you will have an audience, a round of applause, and someone else’s shoulder in every photograph. If you are considering the Classic Flight at 170 € because the view is identical — it is identical, and it is still the wrong booking for this morning.

Private Flight Royal Flight
Price per person 500 € 650 €
Basket Yours alone Yours alone
You are Standing Seated at a table
Breakfast Berber, under a caidal tent after landing Bacha Coffee, served in the air by a steward
Crew Dedicated pilot and ground crew Dedicated crew plus onboard steward
Best for The classic version: standing at the rim, the plain below A setting rather than a moment — table, service, breakfast at altitude

Two people on a private flight is 1 000 €; on the Royal, 1 300 €. Those are the real totals, because balloon flights are priced per passenger rather than as a charter you split.

When to do it, during the flight

The flight runs 40 to 60 minutes and it has a shape. Knowing it is most of the planning.

  1. The first few minutes are busy. Take-off, the burner running hard, everyone looking down at the ground dropping away. Not the moment.
  2. Then the climb settles. The pilot levels off, the burner goes quiet between bursts, and the whole region opens up — plain, Jbilet to the north, Atlas to the south. This is the window. Roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes in.
  3. The low pass is lovely but distracting. Villages waking up, people waving, animals. Wonderful, and everyone is looking down, not at each other.
  4. The landing is not romantic. Bracing, holding the rim, a bump, a chase vehicle arriving. Do not leave it this late.

If you would rather not read the moment yourself, say so when you book: the pilot can give you a quiet signal when the conditions are right.

What we can arrange — and what we will not promise

Tell us what you have in mind when you book and we will tell you honestly what is possible on the morning. Some things depend on the wind, the crew and the season, and we would rather say no in advance than fail on the day.

What we will do, always, at no extra cost:

  • Keep it quiet. No announcement, no build-up, nothing said in front of your partner.
  • Brief the pilot and the ground crew beforehand, so nobody blunders into it.
  • Give you the time. On a private flight the pilot is yours, and a few extra minutes at the right altitude is a request we can usually honour.
  • Keep your hands free. Tell us you have a ring and we will make sure you are not holding anything else at the wrong moment.

Anything beyond that — decoration, catering, music, a photographer on the ground at landing — ask us. Some of it we can do, some of it we cannot, and the answer depends on the date.

Three things that go wrong

Booking it for the last morning of the trip

This is the big one. Balloons are grounded by wind and rain, the decision is made at the launch site on the morning itself by the pilot, and a cancelled flight has to move to another day. If your only free morning is the day before your flight home, you have nowhere to move it to — and a proposal with no backup date is a bad plan. Book it early in your stay.

The ring in a pocket, at 500 metres

You will be wearing a jacket you take off, standing in a basket, over open country. Use a zipped inner pocket, and check it before you leave the hotel rather than in the air. Nothing that has to be unwrapped, unboxed or held in two hands.

Expecting to film it yourself

You cannot hold a phone, a ring and a hand at the same time. The onboard video is filmed and sold at the base on the day — if you want footage of the moment rather than of the landscape, that is the way to get it. Ask about it when you arrive, not in the basket.

What the morning looks like, start to finish

A private car collects you from your hotel or riad before first light — between roughly 05:00 in June and 07:30 in January, because flights are timed to sunrise. The month-by-month table is here if you are choosing dates.

Moroccan tea at the base while your balloon is inflated — twenty minutes of genuine spectacle, and a good chance to calm down. Briefing in the basket, then take-off at daybreak. Forty to sixty minutes in the air. A 4×4 follows you and collects you where you land, and breakfast is served under a caidal tent, prepared by the women of the douar of Oulad El Garn. You each leave with a flight certificate carrying your first name in Arabic calligraphy — which, on this particular morning, is a better souvenir than it sounds.

Back at your riad by mid-morning.

Choosing the month

Every month flies. September to November is the best overall balance: settled air, moderate temperatures, reasonable start times. Winter gives the latest, most civilised start and often the clearest view of the snow on the Atlas — worth knowing if you want mountains in the photographs. Spring is the windiest season and the most likely to be postponed, which matters more than usual when the date is not arbitrary.

Dress for the ground, not the sky: it is 5.9 °C on average before dawn in January. The full guide is in what to wear for a balloon ride in Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

Can you propose in a hot air balloon in Marrakech?

Yes, and it is the most common reason people book a private balloon here. Book a private flight, tell us in advance, and propose in the quiet stretch after the initial climb.

How much does it cost?

A private flight is 500 € per person, so 1 000 € for two. The seated Royal flight, with breakfast served in the air, is 650 € per person.

Do I have to tell you beforehand?

You do not have to, but it is much better if you do. It costs nothing, it stays between you and us, and it means the crew will not walk into the middle of it.

Can I book a shared flight and propose anyway?

You can, and people do. You will have an audience and other people in your photographs. If the moment matters, book private.

Will anyone film it?

Not by default. The onboard video is filmed and sold at the launch site on the day — ask when you arrive if you want the moment captured.

When during the flight should I do it?

Roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes in, once the pilot has levelled off and the burner is quiet between bursts. Not at take-off, not during the landing.

What if the weather cancels the flight?

It moves to another morning. This is why you book early in your stay — a proposal with no spare date is the one thing we cannot fix on the day.

Can you arrange flowers, champagne or a photographer?

Ask us with your dates and we will tell you honestly what is possible for that morning. We would rather decline in advance than disappoint you on the day.
