Hot air balloon flights over Marrakech, in plain terms

A hot air balloon flight over Marrakech is a sunrise flight over the agricultural plain north of the city — not over the city itself, and not over the Agafay stone desert. A 4×4 or a private car collects you from your hotel or riad while it is still dark, and you are back by mid-morning with the rest of the day free. The whole morning runs four to five hours, of which 40 to 60 minutes are in the air.

The flight itself has two halves. The first takes you high, for the panorama across the region: the plain below, the Jbilet ridge on the northern horizon and the High Atlas to the south, often with snow on it in winter. The second brings you back down low, drifting over douars waking up, over fields, tracks and livestock, close enough to wave at people below. That low pass is the part people describe afterwards.

You land wherever the wind puts you. A 4×4 chase vehicle follows the balloon across the plain and collects you there. Breakfast is served under a caidal tent, prepared by the women of the douar of Oulad El Garn, and you are handed a flight certificate with your first name written in Arabic calligraphy.

Which of the three flights is right for you

The route, the landscape and the time in the air are identical on all three. What changes is who is in the basket with you.

The Classic Flight, 170 €, is the one most of our guests take and the one we would book ourselves: a shared basket, the full morning, the lowest honest price. The Private Flight, 500 €, gives you the balloon, the pilot and the ground crew to yourselves — book it for a proposal, a milestone or a company morning, not for comfort. The Royal Flight, 650 €, is the only flight in Marrakech where you are seated at a table rather than standing, with a steward serving a Bacha Coffee breakfast in the air.

That last one also happens to be the only option for anyone who cannot stand for an hour or climb over the side of a basket.

When is the best time of year to fly?

Every month flies. September to November is the best overall balance. Winter gives the latest start and often the clearest view of the Atlas; summer gives the earliest start and the coolest hour of a hot day; spring is the windiest and therefore the most likely to be postponed.

What happens if the weather cancels my flight?

Balloons do not fly in strong wind or rain, and the call is made at the launch site on the morning itself, by the pilot. A cancelled flight moves to another morning — which is why we ask you to book early in your stay rather than on your last day.
