What the morning actually looks like

Most operators sell you “a balloon ride”. What you are really buying is a five-hour morning. Here is how ours runs, in order.

Pickup from your hotel or riad

A 4×4 or a van collects you at your place of stay in Marrakech, early, while the city is still dark. You do not need to find your way anywhere. Give us the name of your riad when you book — the medina is a maze, and our drivers know it.

Arrival at the base

We serve Moroccan mint tea while the crew works. This is not filler time: it is when the balloon comes out of its bag, the fans push cold air into the envelope, and the burners lift it upright. Standing next to a balloon being inflated is one of the best parts of the morning, and it is the part most people do not expect.

Why it has to be dawn

Balloons fly at daybreak because that is when the air is stable. Cool air, calm winds, no thermals rising off the plain. It is a safety requirement, not a photography preference — though the light happens to be extraordinary. We explain this in more depth in why Marrakech balloon flights fly at sunrise.

The briefing and the flight

Your pilot gives the safety briefing inside the basket, before take-off: how to stand, where to hold, what to do on landing. Then you lift.

The flight has two distinct halves. The first takes you high, for the panorama across the whole region — the plain, the Jbilet mountains to the north and the High Atlas on the southern horizon. The second half comes back down low, and this is where the flight becomes memorable: you drift over villages waking up, over farms and livestock, close enough to wave at people below.

How long you fly and how high depends on the weather that morning. Forty minutes is the floor; an hour is common.

Landing, breakfast and certificate

A 4×4 chase vehicle follows the balloon across the plain and picks you up where you touch down. You are then welcomed under a caidal tent for a Berber breakfast prepared by the women of the douar of Oulad El Garn.

Your flight certificate is handed over there, with your first name written in Arabic. There is a small shop on site, and then the drive back to your hotel.

What is included

  • Roundtrip transport from your hotel or riad in Marrakech
  • Reception at the base with Moroccan tea and refreshments
  • Watching the balloon being prepared and inflated
  • Safety briefing by your pilot
  • 40 to 60 minutes of flight in a shared basket
  • Berber breakfast under a caidal tent after landing
  • Flight certificate with your name in Arabic

What is not included

  • The onboard video. Filmed on the day and sold separately at the base. One guest summed it up in a review: worth paying for the extra video when you get there.
  • Tips for the pilot and ground crew. Not expected, always appreciated.
  • Anything from the shop at the landing site.
  • A private basket. That is the Private Flight.

Where you actually fly

Take-off is from our base on the plain north of Marrakech, not from the city itself and not from the Agafay desert. The landscape below you is agricultural Morocco: douars, fields, dirt tracks, the occasional herd. The Jbilet range sits on the northern horizon and the High Atlas closes the view to the south.

This matters when you compare offers. “Hot air balloon Marrakech” and “hot air balloon Agafay” are sold as the same thing and they are not — the terrain, the light and the flight profile are different. We compare the take-off zones in where to fly a hot air balloon in Morocco.

Who the Classic Flight is right for

Choose it if you want the full experience at the lowest honest price, you do not mind sharing a basket with other travellers, and you are happy for the morning to run on a group schedule. It is the flight most of our guests take, and it is the one we would book ourselves.

Choose something else if you are proposing, celebrating an anniversary, travelling for a company event, or you simply do not want strangers in your photographs. In that case the Private Flight at 500 € gives you your own balloon, and the Royal Flight at 650 € serves breakfast in the air.

Before you book

Two things decide whether your morning goes well, and both are on you.

Dress for the ground, not the sky. It is cold before dawn on the plain, even in summer, and warm by the time you land. Layers and closed shoes — the full list is in what to wear for a balloon ride in Marrakech.

Book the flight early in your trip. Balloons are grounded by wind and rain, and when a morning is cancelled the flight moves to another day. If your only free morning is the day before your flight home, you have no room to reschedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech?

The Classic shared flight is 170 € per person, all inclusive. Private baskets start at 500 € and the seated Royal flight is 650 €. We break down the whole market, including what other operators leave out of their headline price, in what a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech really costs.

How long is the flight?

Forty to sixty minutes in the air. The whole morning, from pickup to drop-off, runs about four to five hours.

What time do you pick me up?

Early, before sunrise — the exact time moves through the year because sunrise does. We confirm your exact pickup time and address in writing when we confirm your booking.

Is 170 € the final price?

Yes. Transport, tea, flight, breakfast and certificate are all in it. The only things sold separately at the base are the onboard video and the shop.

What happens if the flight is cancelled for weather?

Balloons do not fly in strong wind or rain, and the decision is made on the morning itself by the pilot. If your flight is cancelled we move you to another morning. Tell us at booking how many days you have left in Marrakech so we can plan around them.

Do I need to be fit?

You need to be able to climb into and out of the basket, and to stand for the length of the flight. If that is a problem for someone in your group, tell us before you book — the Royal Flight is the only one where you are seated.

Do you fly over the Agafay desert?

No. We take off from the plain north of Marrakech, over farmland and villages, with the Jbilet range to the north. That is a different landscape from Agafay’s stone desert.

Can I book for tomorrow?

Often yes, if there is space in the basket. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight away.
