What Is Included in a Hot Air Balloon Experience in Marrakech
A proper Marrakech balloon package includes hotel pickup and drop-off, refreshments at the launch site, the safety briefing, 40 to 60 minutes of flight, breakfast after landing and a flight certificate. Anything advertised as a balloon ride that does not include transport and breakfast is not the standard product — it is a cheaper one, and the difference will find you on the morning.

The four things that actually differ between operators
Every operator’s inclusion list looks similar on a web page. These are the lines where the real differences hide.
1. How long you are in the air
The honest range in Marrakech is 40 to 60 minutes. Some listings quote “one hour” and deliver thirty minutes. The airtime depends on the morning’s wind and on where the pilot can safely put the balloon down, so no operator can guarantee a figure to the minute — but they can tell you their normal range, and you should ask for it.
2. What the transport actually is
“Transport included” can mean a private car for you, or a van that collects five other groups across Marrakech before it reaches the base. Both are legitimate; they are not the same morning. If your pickup is in the medina and the vehicle is shared, expect to be collected first and to wait longest.
3. Whether the basket is genuinely private
A standard basket is shared with other passengers. A private flight means your group alone, with a pilot and ground crew assigned to you. Some listings use “VIP”, “deluxe” or “exclusive” to describe a smaller shared basket. Ask the direct question: is anyone else in the basket?
4. What breakfast means
At one end, a genuine Berber breakfast served under a caidal tent after landing. At the other, a coffee and a croissant handed over at the vehicle. The breakfast is a real part of the morning — it is where the flight decompresses and where you meet the people you flew with.
What the morning actually contains, in order
Whatever the operator, the shape of a Marrakech balloon morning is the same, and it is longer than the flight.
- Pickup, in the dark. Between roughly 05:00 in June and 07:00 in January, because flights are timed to sunrise. Our guide to why Marrakech balloons fly at dawn has the month-by-month table.
- Arrival at the launch site. Tea while the crew works.
- Inflation. The envelope comes out of the bag, fans push cold air in, the burners bring it upright. Twenty minutes of genuine spectacle that most listings never mention.
- Briefing and boarding. How to stand, where to hold, what to do on landing.
- The flight. Typically high first for the panorama over the plain, the Jbilet to the north and the High Atlas to the south, then low over villages and farms.
- Landing and recovery. A 4×4 follows the balloon across the plain and picks you up wherever you touch down. There is no fixed landing field — that is how ballooning works.
- Breakfast and certificate. Then the drive back.
Total: about four to five hours door to door, of which 40 to 60 minutes are airborne. If a listing implies a two-hour outing, it has not counted the recovery and breakfast.
What is almost never included
- The onboard video. Filmed and sold on the day at the base. Worth it if you want footage of yourself rather than of the landscape — you can take the landscape shots on your own phone.
- Tips. Not obligatory in Morocco, and no crew will chase you for one.
- Anything from the shop at the landing site.
- Hotel breakfast you will miss. You leave before the kitchen opens. Some riads will leave something out if you ask the night before.
- A guaranteed date. Weather cancels flights; the flight moves, it does not evaporate. This is why you book early in your stay.
The six questions to ask before you pay
- Is the basket shared or private, and if shared, roughly how many people?
- What is your normal airtime, in minutes?
- Is the transport private or shared, and does it cover my address?
- What exactly is the breakfast, and where is it served?
- What happens, in writing, if the flight is cancelled for weather?
- Is the price I am seeing the price I pay, or are there fees at checkout?
An operator who answers all six without hedging is an operator who runs a tidy morning. The sixth question is the one that catches people out: marketplace listings add a service fee at the final step, so the figure you compared is not the figure you paid. With any serious operator, yes — served after landing, once the chase vehicle has collected you. What differs is whether it is a real Berber breakfast under a tent or something handed to you at the car.
Is hotel pickup included?
Standard in Marrakech, in both directions. Check that your address is covered if you are staying deep in the medina or outside the city.
How long is the actual flight?

Are photos or video included?

What happens if the weather cancels my flight?
The flight moves to another morning. Ask for the policy in writing before you pay, and book early in your stay so there is a spare morning to move to.
