Private vs Shared Hot Air Balloon in Marrakech: Which One to Book
A shared balloon costs 170 € per person and puts you in a basket with other travellers. A private balloon costs 500 € per person and gives you the basket, the pilot and the ground crew to yourselves. The flight path, the landscape and the duration are the same. What you are paying for is the absence of other people.
For most travellers, shared is the right answer. For a proposal, a milestone, or a company morning, it is not. This guide is the decision, not the sales pitch.
What is actually different
| Shared (Classic) | Private | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per person | 170 € | 500 € |
| Who is in the basket | You and other groups | Your group only |
| Pilot | Shared with everyone aboard | Assigned to you |
| Ground crew | Shared | Assigned to you |
| Transport | 4×4 or van, possibly with other pickups | Private VIP car, straight there |
| Departure time | Set by the slowest pickup on the round | Set by you |
| Time in the air | 40–60 minutes | 40–60 minutes |
| Route and landscape | Identical | Identical |
| Breakfast | Berber, under the caidal tent | Berber, under the caidal tent |
| Certificate in Arabic | Yes | Yes |
Read that table twice, because it is the honest version. The view is the same view. Nobody flies a better sky because they paid more.
What a private flight costs your group
Per-person pricing hides the real decision, which is what the morning costs in total. Here is the arithmetic.
| Group size | Shared, total | Private, total | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | 340 € | 1 000 € | +660 € |
| 3 people | 510 € | 1 500 € | +990 € |
| 4 people | 680 € | 2 000 € | +1 320 € |
| 6 people | 1 020 € | 3 000 € | +1 980 € |
The premium scales with the group, which is the opposite of how people usually imagine private hire working. A private balloon is not a fixed charter you split — it is priced per passenger. So the larger your group, the harder the private option is to justify on anything but occasion.
When private is worth it
You are proposing
This is the clearest case, and it is most of our private bookings — we have written up how to plan a balloon proposal in Marrakech separately. A shared basket means strangers, phones, and someone else’s conversation in the background of the most photographed ninety seconds of your relationship. Tell us when you book and the crew will plan it without announcing anything.
It is a milestone, not an activity
A significant anniversary, a honeymoon, a birthday that ends in a zero. If the balloon is the centrepiece of the trip rather than one line on an itinerary, the private version is the one people describe afterwards.
It is a company morning
Incentives, client trips, small team events. A private flight gives you a schedule you control and a group that stays together, which matters when the morning has to slot into a programme.
Someone in the group needs the space
Nervous flyers do better without an audience. So do families with a child who may or may not enjoy the first five minutes.
When shared is the better buy
If you are two travellers who want to see Marrakech from the air, the shared flight gives you the identical experience for 660 € less. The basket is not cramped, the other passengers are having the same good morning you are, and the crew is the same crew.
Put bluntly: if you find yourself justifying the private flight on comfort or view, book the shared one and spend the difference on the rest of your trip. Book private when the reason is the occasion.
The third option: the Royal Flight
There is one case where the extra money does buy a different experience rather than more privacy. The Royal Flight, at 650 € per person, is the only balloon flight in Marrakech where you fly seated at a table instead of standing, with a steward serving a Bacha Coffee breakfast in the air rather than on the ground after landing.
That is a genuine structural difference, not an upgrade badge. It is also the only flight available to someone who cannot stand for an hour or climb over the side of a basket — which makes it the answer for guests who had assumed ballooning was closed to them.
How the morning runs, either way
Private or shared, the shape is the same. Pickup in the dark — between roughly 05:00 in June and 07:00 in January, because flights are timed to sunrise. Tea at the base while the envelope is inflated. Briefing in the basket. Then high for the panorama across the plain, the Jbilet to the north and the High Atlas to the south, then low over the douars and farms waking up.
A 4×4 chase vehicle follows the balloon and collects you wherever you land. Breakfast is served under a caidal tent, prepared by the women of the douar of Oulad El Garn, and you are handed a certificate with your first name written in Arabic. Total: four to five hours door to door.
If you want the month-by-month take-off times before you plan your week, they are in why Marrakech balloons fly at dawn.
Booking direct versus a marketplace
Private balloon flights over Marrakech appear on the big platforms from around 390 €, which looks cheaper than 500 € until you check three things: whether the basket is genuinely private rather than “VIP”, whether transport and breakfast are included, and what the service fee adds at the final checkout step. The full comparison is in what a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech really costs.
Booking direct also means the person who takes your proposal request is the person who briefs the crew.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a private hot air balloon in Marrakech?
500 € per person with us, all inclusive: private car, private balloon, dedicated pilot and ground crew, breakfast and certificate. A shared flight is 170 € per person.
Is the view better on a private flight?
No. Same balloon type, same launch site, same flight profile, same landscape. You are paying for exclusivity, not altitude.
How many people fit in a private basket?
Tell us your group size when you message us and we will confirm what we can put up that morning.
Can I propose on a private flight?
Yes, and it is the most common reason people book one. Say so in advance so the crew knows and nothing is spoiled by an announcement at the wrong moment.
Is a private flight worth it for two people?
On experience alone, no — the shared flight is identical for 660 € less. On occasion, often yes. Decide on the occasion, not on the flight.
Do we fly alone in the sky?
Your basket is yours, but other balloons launch from the same area on the same morning. Seeing other envelopes in the air is part of the picture, and most people find it improves the photographs.
Do I stand or sit on a private flight?
You stand, as in any conventional basket. The Royal Flight is the only seated option in Marrakech.
What if the weather cancels it?
The flight moves to another morning — the call is made at the launch site by the pilot. Book early in your stay so there is a spare morning to move to.
